On June 27th, 2025, The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie was finally released on the house that it was originally going to be released on, which was HBO Max. Was it worth it?
Yes. For being the very first fully-fledged 2D animated Looney Tunes movie, it was worth the wait.
Before I can review it, I wanna give a big and amazing thanks to the people at Ketchup Entertainment for giving this great movie a chance for it to be shown to the fans of Looney Tunes, animation, cartoons, and people who just want to have at least one more movie to just laugh and have fun. Hopefully with the release of Coyote vs. ACME, the people at Ketchup Entertainment can have another home run.
I would also wanna give a big and amazing thanks to the people over at Warner Bros. Animation for making this project and giving it so much love and creativity for it to come to life in the first place. Only you guys see your animated projects as a way to show expression, creativity, entertainment, and to tell amazing stories to people around the world instead of seeing them as just another product to make money. I would love for the people at Warner Bros. Animation to keep going strong, and to not let David Zaslav ruin anyone's livelihood over greed.
But anyways, The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie was a movie that many people, including me, were waiting on for so long. As far as the year 2021, where it was originally announced to be released on HBO Max and Cartoon Network, but was shelved instead due to the Warner Bros.-Discovery merge that took place months prior. The film was instead being shopped around to other streaming services and distributors. On June 11th, 2024, the movie premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. It was also announced that Ketchup Entertainment acquired the distribution rights for the film to be released in North America. It was shown at another animation film festival in Los Angeles, and was revealed that the movie was set to release on February 28th, 2025. However, the movie's release date was delayed to March 14th, 2025 so that it can be eligible for the Academy Awards. The movie was released with positive reviews, and met box office projections, and made its money back with $15.1 million dollars on a $15 million budget. It was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on May 27th, 2025, released on streaming services on April 15th, 2025, and finally, on HBO Max on June 27th, 2025.
The movie stars Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, who are attempting to save the world from an alien invasion that was caused by chewing gum contaminated with alien goo. The movie starts with a scientist who caught both an asteroid and a hi-speed UFO heading for planet Earth. The scientist investigated the UFO, only to be captured. The movie went over Porky and Daffy's backstory, which was about the duo being raised by a farmer named Farmer Jim, who would take care of the boys all their life until one day, when he went away, but gave a promise for them to always stick together.
In present day, Porky realized that their house was going to be under inspection by the town, so he and Daffy did everything they could to make their house presentable. When the inspector came in, she mentioned that everything was perfect except the fact that their roof had a giant hole in it, as well as some weird goo, so she told the duo that they must repair their house or else their house was going to be condemned. Daffy and Porky decided to go work in multiple jobs only for them to fail in looney ways. Daffy even tried to become a social media influencer, but was cancelled instead. At a diner, the two met Petunia Pig, and Porky started to develop a crush on her. They had a conversation, and Petunia told them that she works at the gum factory for the purpose of trying to find a whole new flavor of gum while hating on the new gum that was about to have a worldwide launch. She had offered both Porky and Daffy an opportunity to work at the gum factory, which they accepted right away.
At the job, Porky and Daffy had very easy objectives. Porky pushes the button, and Daffy pulls the lever. Everything went well with no issues. Porky decided to meet with Petunia while Daffy decided to talk to other people, he saw that the scientist, who is now a zombie under alien control, was going somewhere, and followed him, and decided to put that weird goo into the giant bucket full of the gum supply, and Daffy told Porky about it, but he said that it was just him worrying too much, so he dismisses it. The new gum was launched worldwide, and as Daffy walked in the park, he saw that the people chewing on the gum turned into zombies, so he warned the public and messed up the launch party, and Daffy got arrested and fired, as well as Porky.
Porky bailed Daffy out of jail, and met up with Petunia. Daffy told her if she could sample the tainted gum, where the three characters discovered that an alien invader was the one behind it. The Invader turned the gum into a monster to thwart the plans of the three, but had eliminated it. They would make an idea to make a rotten egg extract so that the people can spit the gum out, and burn it. Porky told Daffy to stay behind so that he won't get in the way, telling him to lay eggs instead. Porky and Petunia were doing very well with this plan until Daffy showed up, and got a little too Looney, and destroyed their weapons on accident, they were surrounded, and the three decided to make a run for it. Unfortunately, Petunia was captured by the zombies, and Porky and Daffy were abducted into the ship and were confined. Their home was destroyed in the process. The Invader had full control of Earth and was ready for his next plan, which was to make the infected humans blow bubbles to make one giant bubble that covers the whole planet. Porky and Daffy broke out, freed Petunia and the scientist, and popped the bubble.
But, it turned out that The Invader was protecting the Earth the whole time from the previously mentioned asteroid, which was heading for the planet in close proximity. The idea was that the big bubble that surrounded the planet would have bounced the asteroid back. This was because The Invader was protecting a valuable resource that was only on Earth, which was boba tea of all things! Earlier, Petunia made up an exploding gum, so the three of them, along with the help of the scientist and The Invader, went into the asteroid to discover the weak spot. Porky and Petunia would put the large amount of exploding gum and the wind-up teeth. However, the wind-up teeth had tipped over. As a last resort, Porky told Daffy to go Looney, where his antics caused the crystals from above to fall into the gum, The three made a run for it, but Daffy got stuck, and Porky went back to him, while Petunia got back into the spaceship. The asteroid would explode, and Daffy and Porky were assumed to die in the explosion.
Everyone on Earth was celebrating, but then, something was coming down on Earth, it turned out to be Porky and Daffy, who actually survived the explosion, and crash-landed on Earth while stuck on the crystal they were stuck to. Petunia was very happy that they survived, she kissed Porky, and actually discovered the ingredient to the new flavor of gum she wanted to make. Porky and Daffy went to their destroyed home, and all they had was a family portrait that Porky saved earlier. But it turned out that behind that portrait, there was a home insurance contract of $5 million dollars, which they used to rebuild the house into a full mansion. The home inspector had her head explode in defeat.
At the very end of the movie, Porky does his usual sign-off of saying, "That's all, folks!" But Daffy came in, and said that the film should be open... for a sequel...
So... was this movie worth the wait? Saying yes is actually an understatement. It's one of the best animated movies that I've ever seen, and it was very much worth the wait. This movie had so much humor, I find the Porky and Petunia scenes to be so cute! And finding boba tea as something valuable is something unexpected... The scene where Porky and Daffy fail at their jobs and Daffy becoming a social media influencer and fails at it was very funny! The music soundtrack and score was amazing, The animation was basic, yet phenomenal on how it was all in 2D, and it is probably, in my opinion, an instant classic! And the fact that there may be a sequel to this is just insane!
overall, I give it a 10/10. It was an animated movie involving such iconic characters that was done very well. If you have a chance, you must watch this movie, it was so worth the wait! Go support 2D animation, and show them you still care!
Big thanks again for Ketchup Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation for making this movie possible, it was such an honor to watch a movie that was finally given the chance it fully deserves. I hope that Coyote vs. ACME can be another great movie.
and that's all, folks!
